Short-handed Auburn can't match Batavia

ROCKFORD - Auburn's Haniefe Johnson scored a MLK Showcase-high 26 points in the final game of the night, but he got little help offensively as the Knights fell to Batavia, 49-46.

Auburn played the game without its second and third leading scorers. After Johnson, the Knights' next leading scorer was Mar'Quall Smith with six points.

Still, Auburn's defense kept them in it throughout. The game was tied at 22 at halftime and at 33 in the third quarter before Batavia got some breathing room. Jayden Johnson led Batavia, which went 3-1 over the Showcase, with 16 points and Ethan Ivan had 12.

Huskies outgun Crusaders

ROCKFORD - Five different Huskies hit three-pointers led by Dominic Dawsey's six as Harlem held off Rockford Lutheran, 75-68, in Lutheran's only game in the J-Hawk MLK Showcase.

Dawsey ended up with 20 points and Harlem led by as many as 19 points in the second half before Lutheran made a late run. Lathan Lewis had 16 points and Austin Casteel added 12.

Lutheran was led by Tyler Penney, who had 20 points, and Zach Derus, who added 17.

Surprising star leads J-Hawks over Panthers

ROCKFORD - Jefferson controlled the action throughout in a 48-33 win over East Moline United Township, but the leading man was a bit of a surprise.

Jefferson got a season-high 20 points from La'Juan Morris, all in the final three quarters.

The J-Hawks led 13-11 after one, stretchred it to six at halftime and led by 12 after three. Brenden Moss added 13 for the host J-Hawks, who went 3-0 in the Showcase and improved to 19-3 for the season.

Michael Merrick led United Township, which dropped two games Monday, with nine points.

Solid Vikings down Bulldogs

ROCKFORD - Guilford dominated the second half to down Batavia, 62-46, for its second win of the day at the J-Hawk MLK Showcase.

Joey Saunders hit a 30-foot 3-pointer to give the Vikings a 34-32 lead at halftime and the momentum continued in the third quarter behind an aggressive offense. The Vikings worked their way to the line 26 times in the game, making 18, while Batavia was just two for four.

Tyler Knuth was a major factor throughout. He led all scorers with 22 points. He had four in the first, six in the second, eight in the third and four in the fourth. Jack Holmstrom added 12 and Tyson Morris had 11.

Ethan Ivan had 13 points for Batavia, Jayden Johnson 12 and Kyle Neibch 11. The Bulldogs scored just 14 points in the final two quarters.

Jefferson rallies to beat Thornton in overtime

ROCKFORD - Latrell Graham scored 18 of his game-high 19 points in the second half and overtime to lead Jefferson to a 66-55 win over Thornton Fractional South.

The J-Hawks struggled with the Rebels' speed and athleticism for 3 1/2 quarters, trailing 45-35 with 3:45 to play. But Jefferson rallied to take the lead with an 11-0 run, capped by a three-pointer by George Williams.

The Rebels, though, didn't fold rebuilding the lead to 52-49 when Jefferson's Jaquavion Robinson hit a step-back 3-point shot with 1.5 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

The J-Hawks outstscored the Rebels 14-3 in the four-minute overtime with Graham nailing seven of eight free throws.

Brenden Moss added 16 points for Jefferson and Antonio Leavy had 10. Isaiah Lewis led Thornton with 12 and Elijah Watson had 11.

Guilford rallies to top United Township

ROCKFORD - Guilford rallied from an 11-point second quarter deficit to pick up its first win of the J-Hawk MLK Showcase, 44-38, over East Moline United Township.

The Panthers had three different players hit 3-point shots as they jumped out to a 17-6 lead.

Trailing 25-16 at halftime, the Vikings came back in the third quarter behind Nick Stadelman and Jack Holmstrom. Those two combined for 14 third-quarter points as Guilford tied the game at 30.

In the fourth, United Township was held to just one three-point field goal.

Holmstrom led Guilford with 17 points and Stadelman had 10. Izaya Bustos was the only Panther to hit double figures with 10 points.
