North evens its record against Winnebago

ROCKFORD - John Carlson dominated inside with 18 points as Belvidere North knocked off Winnebago, 51-40, to wrap up the J-Hawk MLK Showcase.

The Blue Thunder finished the Showcase 2-2, while Winnebago lost its one MLK game.

Winnebago struggled throughout, scoring just four points in the first quarter and seven in the second.

Derek Rosenstiel led the Indians with 11 points and Cortavius Reed had 10.

Thornton clinches J-Hawk MLK title with win over Jefferson

ROCKFORD - A tired Jefferson squad fell short against Thornton Fractional South, losing 55-50.

The J-Hawks played three straight games Monday, filling in for a school that dropped out. The J-Hawks trailed 44-42 going into the fourth quarter and could never pull into the lead.

The Rebels moved to 3-0 in the Showcase, clinching the MLK title.

Andrew Stewart led TF South with 15 points and his twin brother Elijah had 12. Latrell Graham had 22 for Jefferson, which finished 1-3 over the two-day event.

Graham's buzzer-beater lefts Jefferson over Marian

ROCKFORD - Jefferson's Latrell Graham hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to give Jefferson a win over Woodstock Marian, 57-54.

It was Graham's only basket as Jefferson sat its starters most of the game for rest. The J-Hawks were playing the middle game of three straight as they filled in for a team that cancelled at the last minute.

Even without its typical first string, Jefferson raced out to a 37-25 half-time lead. Marian chipped away and eventually tied the score at 54 with 7.8 seconds left before Graham's game-winner.

Antonio Henigan led Jefferson with 15 points.

The J-Hawks improved to 1-2 in the Showcase. Marian finished 0-4.

North goes cold, falls to Batavia

ROCKFORD - Batavia went on a 13-0 run to open the fourth quarter and blow open a close game, beating Belvidere North, 60-45.

The two teams were tied at 44 after three quarters, but the Blue Thunder made no field goals and only one of six free throws in the final eight minutes.

Batavia finished the J-Hawk MLK Showcase at 1-3. Belvidere North dropped to 1-2 with a game left against Winnebago.

Jayden Johnson led Batavia with 20 points, including making six of eight free throws in the fourth quarter. Zack Weber added 13 and Jack Carlson had 12. Anthony Espensen led North with 13 and John Carlson scored 10. Neither scored in the fourth quarter.

United Township pulls away from Jefferson

ROCKFORD - Daveon Ellis scored 10 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter to lead East Moline United Township to a 48-39 win over Jefferson in the J-Hawk MLK Showcase.

The Panthers finished their first trip to the J-Hawk Showcase at 1-1, while the J-Hawks fell to 0-2.

Atem Agot added 12 points for United Township. George Williams was the only Jefferson player in double figures. He scored 14 points.

Guilford pounds Woodstock Marian

ROCKFORD - Jack Holmstrom scored 10 of his 19 points in the first quarter as Guilford raced out to a 18-6 lead on its way to a 78-32 win over Woodstock Marian.

The Vikings finished the J-Hawk MLK Showcase at 3-1, while Marian dropped to 0-3 with a game left against Batavia.

Jamil Jones was the high scorer with 20 points. Jordan Jones came off the bench to score 11.

Harlem's Williams shoots down Batavia

ROCKFORD - Harlem guard David Williams poured in 31 points to lead the Huskies over Batavia, 58-45.

Harlem finished the J-Hawk MLK Showcase at 2-0, while the Bulldogs dropped to 0-3.

Harlem took a 33-26 lead into the third quarter, but Batavia went on a 10-2 run to grab the lead. Williams, though, then hit three 3-pointers during a 10-1 run to regain control.

Guilford holds off Moline United Township

ROCKFORD - Guilford improved to 2-1 in the J-Hawk MLK Showcase by knocking off East Moline United Township, 48-45.

The Panthers are playing in the Showcase for the first time and raced out to a 20-6 lead. Guilford, though, responded with a 19-0 run.

The Vikings took a four point lead into the final quarter, but the teams traded leads until Jack Holmstrom's two free throws gave the Vikings breathing room in the final seconds.

Holmstrom led Guilford with 18 points and Alejandro Rodriguez added 10.

Chicago Lindblom overpowers Jefferson late

ROCKFORD - Chicago Lindblom went on a 14-5 run to open the fourth quarter and break away from Jefferson for a 67-55 win to close out the first day of the J-Hawk MLK Showcase.

The Eagles went 2-0 in their first visit to the Showcase. Miles Twyman led Lindblom with 23 points - which was the high individual effort of any team Saturday - and Marshun Williams chipped in 17.

Latrell Graham led the J-Hawks with 17 points, but he was held scoreless in the fourth quarter. Jaquavion Robinson added 12 points.

Guilford struggles to score against TF South

ROCKFORD - Thornton Fractional South held Guilford to 22 points in the second and third quarters and rolled to a 61-47 win in its second game of the day at the J-Hawk MLK Showcase.

The Vikings finished the day 1-1, while the Rebels were a perfect 2-0.

James Drummond had 15 points and Elijah Stewart added 10 for TF South.

Jamil Jones had 15 for Guilford and no other Viking scored more than seven. Guilford struggled to get open looks against the Rebels defense. The Vikings had just 14 field goals. Only their stellar 17-of-19 free throw shooting kept the game from being a complete runaway.

Late spurt pushes North past Marian

ROCKFORD - Belvidere North scored 25 of the final 33 points to blow open a close game and beat Woodstock Marian, 68-48, in the second game of the J-Hawk MLK Showcase for both teams.

The Blue Thunder built a 13-point lead in the first half before Marian cut the lead to 43-40 in the third quarter. North, though, went on a 17-2 run to put the game away.

North, which went 1-1 on the day, was led by Carson Blatchford's 17 points. John Carlson chipped in 14.

Marian was 0-2 on the day. Brogan Pivnicka was high scorer with 15 points.

Thornton Fractional South outruns Batavia

ROCKFORD - Thornton Fractional South raced out to a 17-5 lead over Batavia and the Bulldogs never recovered, falling 69-49 to the Rebels.

It was the first game of the J-Hawk MLK Showcase for the Rebels, who got 19 points from Elijah Stewart. TF South had 10 different players score.

Batavia fell to 0-2 in the Showcase. Jayden Johnson scored 15.

Chicago Lindblom knocks off North with late run

ROCKFORD - Chicago Lindblom scored 11 of the final 14 points to knock off Belvidere North, handing the NIC-10 its first loss of the J-Hawk MLK Showcase.

The Eagles led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but the Blue Thunder began to chip away. North opened the fourth quarter with a 9-1 run and took a 53-50 lead with about two minutes to play before Lindblom went on a late run.

Marshun Williams led Lindblom with 22 points and Shamar Pumphrey added 14.

Anthony Espensen led North with 17 points and John Carlson added 15.

Balanced Vikings beat Batavia

ROCKFORD - Guilford's balanced offensive attack was too much for Batavia as the Vikings knocked off the Bulldogs, 61-52, in the second game of the J-Hawk MLK Showcase.

Guilford had six players score between seven and 12 points, led by Tyler Knuth's 12 points. The Vikings seized control with a 22-point second quarter and held on in the fourth despite hitting just four of 11 free throws in the final eight minutes.

Zack Weber led Batavia with 18 points and Jayden Johnson added 17.

Guilford has a second game today. The Vikings take on Thornton Fractional South at 6:30 p.m.

Harlem opens MLK with route of Woodstock Marian

ROCKFORD - Three Harlem Huskies scored in double-figures, led by David Williams' 17 points, as Harlem raced away from Woodstock Marian early in the opening game of the J-Hawk MLK Showcase.

Harlem led 25-13 after one quarter and 46-23 at halftime and ended up winning 79-45.

Treye Tucker added 14 points for Harlem and Bryson Thomas chipped in 13. Ben Moscinski led Woodstock Marian with 14 points.

Saturday start for J-Hawk MLK Showcase pushed back to 11 a.m.

Winter storm Harper is playing havoc with schedules through the East and Midwest and that includes the J-Hawk MLK Showcase.

Saturday's slate of games won't tip off until 11 a.m. to give Woodstock Marian and East Moline United Township plenty of time to safely reach Rockford.

Schedule for this year's Jefferson MLK Showcase

The annual J-Hawk MLK Showcase will take place Jan. 19 and Jan. 21 and features 11 varsity and sophomore teams on two courts. The two-day hoops fest includes several annual favorites, including Woodstock Marian and Batavia, but it also includes some MLK newcomers such Thornton Fractional South and Chicago Lindblom.
