New Trier rolls early against Harlem, finishes MLK 4-0

ROCKFORD - New Trier scored the first 14 points of the final game of the J-Hawk MLK Showcase and cruised to a 67-49 win over Harlem.

The Huskies made it competitive briefly in the second quarter but could never cut the deficit below 10 points. Harlem finished the MLK 0-4.

Nine Trevians scored, led by Matt Samuelson's 11 points. Noah Osher and Andrew Kirkpatrick added 10 each.

Devin Paladino led Harlem with nine points, all in the fourth quarter.

Batavia tops Belvidere to finish 4-0 MLK run

ROCKFORD - Batavia answered the question of whether it would go undefeated this weekend pretty quickly against Belvidere, scoring 22 of the first 24 points in what turned out to be a 50-32 win.

Phil Kolk had scored 23 points in each of his first three MLK games for Belvidere. The Bulldogs held him to five. Zack Tobler led the Bucs with 15.

Batavia went to the bench early and had 12 players score. Jayden Johnson topped the Bulldogs with nine points and Eric Peterson with eight.

Guilford gets win in MLK finale

ROCKFORD - Sophomores Tyler Knuth and Jack Holmstrom combined for 33 points to lead Guilford over Johnsburg at Guilford in its final game in J-Hawk MLK Showcase.

Guilford had been held to 33 points in its first game of the day against Batavia. Against the Skyhawks, the Vikings poured in 36 in the first half, grabbing a 12-point lead they wouldn't give up.

Knuth topped Guilford with 21 points, Holmstrom had 12 and junior Jamil Jones also had 12.

Zach Toussaint had another solid game for Johnsburg with 22 points.

Jefferson holds off South Elgin

ROCKFORD - Jefferson finished its J-Hawk MLK Showcase 3-1 with a 57-43 win over South Elgin.

The J-Hawks raced out to a 10-2 lead, but the Storm slowed the game down and kept the deficit under double-digits for most of the second half.

Jefferson's Quillin Dixon, who was honored before the game for hitting 1,000 career points on Saturday, had his first good shooting game in the Showcase, leading the J-Hawks with 19 points. George Williams chipped in 14 and My'Quion Garrett had 13.

Vince Miszkiewicz led South Elgin with 11 points.

New Trier shuts down Elgin Larkin

ROCKFORD - Elgin Larkin's Anthony Lynch impressed Saturday afternoon, pouring in 26 points, but Winnetka New Trier turned him into essentially a one-man show.

Five different Trevians hit three-point shots, while only four Royals scored at all in 61-42 win by New Trier.

New Trier hit four three-point shots in a two-minute stretch in the second quarter to open up a 40-16 lead and Larkin never seriously threatened to make a game of it.

Griffin Ryan scored 16 points for New Trier, Andrew Kirkpatrick added 13 and Brian Conaghan 12.

South Elgin shuts down Marian

ROCKFORD - The South Elgin Storm throttled Woodstock Marian, holding the hurricanes to just 22 first-half points in a 69-47 win.

Noah Rohr scored 11 of his 13 points in the first quarter as the Storm raced to a 22-11 lead. Vince Miszkiewicz added 10 points.

Spencer Hines led Marian with 10 points.

J-Hawks blitz Milwaukee school making its MLK debut

ROCKFORD - Milwaukee Bradley Tech ran into a buzzsaw in its first game in the J-Hawk MLK Showcase, falling to the host Jefferson J-Hawks, 83-57.

Jefferson raced to a 28-6 lead after the first quarter and led 50-22 at halftime.

Jefferson's starters just played a handful of minutes in the second half. My'Quion Garrett led Jefferson with 17 points. Thirteen J-Hawks scored.

Johnsburg's Toussaint too much for Belvidere

ROCKFORD - Zach Toussaint torched Belvidere for 31 points as the Skyhawks downed the Bucs, 72-56.

Toussaint usually does most of his damage from behind the three-point line. Against Belvidere, he hit just one three-pointer, instead slicing inside for 11 two-point shots and six free throws.

Phil Kolk had his third straight 23-point game for Belvidere, which dropped to 1-2 in the MLK Showcase.

Winnebago makes plays down the stretch to beat Harlem

ROCKFORD - Winnebago scored 10 of the final 13 points to pull away from Harlem for a 59-52 win in its only appearance in the J-Hawk MLK Showcase.

Harlem dropped to 0-3 in the weekend tournament.

Freshman Bryson Thomas had his second straight solid game with 13 points, including seven in the fourth quarter to help the Huskies tie the game. Jaeden Gaither had nine points in the first half.

Winnebago was led by Tysheon Waller's 23 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter.

Batavia throttles Guilford

ROCKFORD - The Batavia Bulldogs raced out to a 22-7 lead over Rockford Guilford at Guilford and eased to a 50-33 win.

It was Batavia's third win of the J-Hawk MLK Classic and the third loss for the Vikings.

Jayden Johnson led the Bulldogs, who played the reserves much of the second half, with 16 points. Tyler Knuth led the Vikings with 11.

ROCKFORD - The Royals raced out to a 47-28 halftime lead and cruised to its third win, 78-59 over Woodstock Marian, in the J-Hawk MLK Showcase.

Eleven Royals scored, led by Anthony Lynch and Latrell Hudson with 13 each. Michel Hucek led Marian with 13 points.
