Last second layup leads Jefferson over Waukegan in overtime

ROCKFORD - Quillin Dixon made his second straight buzzer-beating basket to lead the J-Hawks to a win in the J-Hawk MLK Showcase, but this one was only possible because of a huge hustle play by James Dunner.

The J-Hawks trailed 63-62 in overtime and was looking for the go ahead score when Dixon was trapped in the corner and turned it over. A Waukegan player broke ahead for what could have been the game-clinching layup, but Dunner chased him down and blocked the shot from behind. The rebound came down to Tavian Jones who threw it back down to the other end where Dixon was waiting to lay it in as the buzzer sounded.

Jefferson finished the J-Hawk Showcase 4-0. The game was the only appearance of the weekend for Waukegan.

Dixon led Jefferson with 26 points and My'Quion Garrett added 16. Bryant Brown led Waukegan with 21 and Jordan Brown had 19.

Belcher led both teams with 20 points, including scoring the final 11 points for the Rams. Belcher hit two three-point shots with defenders in his face, was fouled on another attempt and hit all three free throws and then drove through three defenders to score as time expired.

Deerfield allowed Rogers to get back into the game by missing the front end of all three one-and-one attempts in the final two minutes. The Warriors finished 1-3 in the tournament with one loss Saturday coming on a last-second three-pointer by Elgin Larkin.

Christian Smith added 18 points for Rogers, which was only scheduled to play two games in the Showcase. Ohio restricts teams to playing just 22 regular season games. Alex Casieri topped Deerfield with 17 points and Ben Bizar added 15.

Short-handed Harlem no match for Deerfield

ROCKFORD - Deerfield's press bothered Harlem early as the Warriors raced out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter and the Huskies never threatened after, falling 71-37.

Harlem was late to the first game on court two. Several players couldn't make it to the bus because of the slick roads and Harlem's bus got stuck trying to pick up the players who did call for a ride.

Allen White III was again the only consistent offensive threat for Harlem. White scored 17 points to lead all scorers. White has scored 61 of Harlem's 127 points in its three showcase losses.

Deerfield on the other hand had four players top 10 points. Will Murphy scored 14, Alex Casieri and Ben Bizar had 13 each and Danny Siegel added 12.

Deerfield's last game is at noon against Toledo Rogers, which knocked off Boylan in the final game of the showcase Saturday night.
