Belvidere North earns first win of the year

ROCKFORD -- Belvidere North, which had scored just 73 points total in three J-Hawk MLK Showcase losses, caught fire Monday afternoon and knocked off Rockford Lutheran, 63-60.

The win was the first of the year for the Blue Thunder. Rylen Kirk led the way with 18 points, including five three-pointers, and Sebastian Gutierrez added 15.

Belvidere North held a 63-60 lead when Kirk missed a free throw that could have clinched it. Lutheran hustled down and found Luke Harper open in the corner. Harper's three-point attempt was blocked by Gutierrez. Harper grabbed the rebound and passed to James Robinson, who made his three-point shot. It was waived off though because Lutheran coach Tom Guse called timeout before Robinson released the shot.

After the timeout, Kenneth Strawbridge took an off-balance three-pointer at the buzzer, which rimmed out.

Lutheran and Belvidere North each went 1-3 in the showcase.

Joshua Streeter led Lutheran with 11 points and Robinson and Harper scored 10 points each.
